Chain | Cohn | Clark’ managing partner David Cohn has been selected to join the International Society of Barristers, a widely-respected invitation-only group whose aim it is to preserve trial by jury, the adversary system and an independent judiciary.
“It’s a huge honor to be chosen to join the International Society of Barristers,” Cohn said. “Through the society, I will continue to uphold our nation’s legal system and help protect the rights of people in our country.”
Membership into the International Society of Barristers is extended to “advocates of exceptional talent whose qualities including integrity, honor, and collegiality embody the spirit of the true professional,” according to the society.
The society was created in 1965 with the goal to bring together the best of the trial bar in a setting free from partisan interests. Membership is open to both plaintiffs’ or defendants’ advocates, who consider, rationally and in good will, issues of ethics and excellence in advocacy and the role of litigation in society.
“As individuals, the fellows of the society are committed to the highest of ethical standards and to civility in all their personal and professional relationships,” according to the society.
New members for the society are elected by the Board of Governors after a nomination from an existing fellow of the society — no lawyer may apply for membership. Each potential nominee undergoes a rigorous screening process involving lawyers and judges to identify trial lawyers who meet its standards.
Membership is limited, and the society has fellows from every state in the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, as well as from Australia, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland.
Cohn has served as an attorney for 40 years, all of those years serving the Bakersfield/Kern County area with the law firm founded by Morris Chain 80 years ago, now called Chain | Cohn | Clark. The attorneys at the personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm represent injured victims of Kern County, and throughout California.
Through his career, Cohn has been honored with several other industry accolades. He has been named a Super Lawyer in Southern California the last three years, and has been voted “Best Lawyer” in the Best of Kern County poll. His other memberships include the American Board of Trial Advocates, and he previously served on the Board of Governors for the Consumer Attorneys of California, and as past president of the Kern County Trial Lawyers Association.
Through the International Society of Barristers, Cohn will be helping uphold our nation’s legal system by working with other members to support common goals: retaining trial by jury in litigated matters, encouraging and demanding ethical conduct by all involved in litigation, and overall protecting the rights of citizens, the independence of the judiciary and the integrity of the bar.
