Bakersfield Police officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit involving a suspect wanted for auto theft and other charges. That suspect crashed into vehicles during the pursuit in southwest Bakersfield, at which time he fled on foot. As officers pursued him, they released a K-9 named Kane, who proceeded to bite one of the nearby crash victims who opened the drivers’ door to her vehicle and exited her car. The K-9 bit the woman, an unintended target, on her lower abdomen and other areas, suffering severe injuries. Kane had a history of an unwarranted attack in 2021, when the dog allegedly bit a man while he was asleep in bed.
